Key On-Set SFX Roles:

  • Special Effects Supervisor/Coordinator: Head of the department, designs and oversees all practical effects, coordinating with the director and managing the budget and team.
  • SFX Foreman/Key Tech: Manages the crew, sets up equipment, and ensures safety during execution.
  • SFX Technician: Operates equipment (wind machines, squibs, rigging), builds props, and troubleshoots issues.
  • Pyrotechnician: Specializes in controlled explosions, fire, and smoke effects, requiring strict safety protocols.
  • Special Effects Designer: Creates the look of props, costumes, and sets, choosing materials and directing their construction. 

What They Do:

  • Atmospheric Effects: Create rain, snow, fog, and wind.
  • Mechanical Effects: Design and operate rigged props, breakaway furniture, and moving sets.
  • Prosthetics & Makeup: Create realistic body parts or wounds (often overlaps with SFX makeup).
  • Pyrotechnics: Execute controlled explosions, bullet hits (squibs), and fire.
  • Wire Work: Set up rigging for falls, flying, and other stunts.
