Post Sound/ Music Editor

Key Responsibilities

  • Track Laying/Editing: Systematically organizing and synchronizing dialogue, sound effects (SFX), and music tracks after picture edit.
  • Dialogue & ADR Editing: Cleaning up location recordings, removing background noise, and editing Automatic Dialogue Replacement (ADR) for clarity.
  • Sound Effects Generation: Sourcing or creating sound effects, ambient noises, and background sounds (ambience/atmos).
  • Foley Integration: Syncing custom-recorded sounds like footsteps or clothing rustles to picture.
  • Collaboration: Working with directors, sound designers, and re-recording mixers to achieve the desired audio vision.
  • Technical Preparation: Ensuring all audio files are properly formatted for the final mixing stage. 

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Software Proficiency: Expert knowledge of Avid Pro Tools is typically required.
  • Technical Knowledge: Understanding of audio signal flow, editing techniques, and mixing.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to spot minor sync issues or extraneous noises.
  • Experience: Proven experience in post-production, often requiring 2-3 years in film or television.
  • Education: A bachelor’s degree in audio engineering, sound design, or a related field is often preferred. 

Typical Work Environment

Sound editors work under pressure to meet tight deadlines in studio environments, focusing heavily on enhancing the narrative through sound.
