Core Responsibilities
- Inventory Management: Track all camera, lighting, audio, and grip equipment using specialized software, ensuring all gear is accounted for and in safe working condition.
- Preparation and Maintenance: Package gear for shoots based on specific project requirements (prep sheets), conduct regular maintenance/testing, and repair or replace broken equipment.
- Logistics & Scheduling: Coordinate the daily checkout, return, and transport of equipment to and from set.
- Budgeting & Procurement: Monitor equipment budgets, reconcile purchases, research new technology, and manage vendor relationships for rentals or purchasing new gear.
- Staff Supervision: Lead, train, and manage the equipment room staff or student assistants.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of current film production gear, including cameras, lighting, and audio equipment.
- Organizational Skills: Proficiency in tracking inventory, maintaining databases, and managing spreadsheets.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to quickly troubleshoot equipment issues on set to prevent production delays.
- Physical Stamina: Capacity to lift and move heavy equipment (often up to 50 lbs).
- Experience: Typically requires a background in film/media production, with some positions asking for 5+ years of relevant experience.
Typical Work Environment
This role often involves working in an equipment room or warehouse, but may require being on set to ensure proper gear setup. Schedules can be demanding, involving weekends, evenings, and overtime.
